U.S. ARMY 349TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 349th Regiment was originally constituted as the 349th Infantry in the National Army and assigned to the 88th Division, its parent unit while deployed to France during World War I where it saw action in the Alsace 1918 campaign. Following the war, the unit was demobilized in 1919 but quickly reconstituted in June 1921 in the Organized Reserves with its old designation and the same assignment, i.e, the 88th Division, which became the 88th Infantry Division in 1942. The Regiment fought in three campaigns in Italy while assigned to the 88th ID—Rome-Arno, North Apennines, Po Valley—and was awarded a French Croix de Guerre with Palm for its outstanding service across all three campaigns.

It was inactivated in 1947 and remained so in 1954 when it was withdrawn from the Army Reserve, allotted to the Regular Army, and relieved from assignment to the 88th Division. Nearly fifty years later, the process was reversed as the Regiment was withdrawn from the Regular Army and allotted to the Army Reserve on 29 October 1998; the following year, it was redesignated as the 349th Regiment and reorganized with three Battalions (1st through 3rd) that were all elements of the 87th Division (Training Support).

With the transformation of the 87th Division into 87th Army Reserve Support Command, the Battalions were assigned to units under the command of First Army Division East. 1st Battalion was assigned to the 295th Infantry Brigade but is now inactivated; as of Autumn 2023, the 2nd Battalion is assigned as a Logistics Support Battalion to the 188th Infantry Brigade and 3rd Battalion serves as a Combat Sustainment Support Battalion for the 177th Armored Brigade.

The 349th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), better known as a “unit crest,” was originally authorized for the 348th Infantry Regiment on 22 March 1926. It was redesignated for the 349th Regiment on 6 April. Its shield is blue and white, two Infantry colors, and the blue recalls the blue quatrefoil worn by the Regiment’s parent organization, the 88th Division, during World War I. A fleur-de-lis recalls the unit’s baptism by fire in France. “Liberty And Rights” is a contraction of the Iowa state motto: “Our liberties we prize and our rights we maintain.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
