U.S. ARMY 348TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 348th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia—more familiarly known as a “unit crest” or a DUI—was approved for the 348th Regiment on 1 October 1993. Its shield portion is in the shape of a Choctaw arrowhead to acknowledge the Native American presence in Mississippi, the state where the unit was originally headquartered. The insignia also commemorates the unit’s ties to Mississippi with an image of a magnolia, the state tree, on the arrowhead. A scroll displays the unit motto, ANKI YAMOHMIKMA KAMASS, which in the Choctaw language means sincerity and strength.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted as the 348th Infantry in the National Army on 5 August 1917, the 348th Regiment was first assigned to the 87th Division, the beginning of an association that would last around ninety years (although it should be noted that the Regiment was disbanded for a stretch of nearly fifty years). As part of the 174th Infantry Brigade, it deployed to France in late summer of 1918, but upon arrival the 87th Division was broken up and its units used as replacements, which is why the Regiment’s World War I streamer is not inscribed with a specific campaign, battle, or location.

Demobilized in 1919, the Regiment was reconstituted in the Organized Reserves with its original designation and assigned once again to the 87th Division, but on 13 February 1942 it was relieved from that assignment and simultaneously allotted to the Army of the United States as an inactive unit and then disbanded on 11 November 1944. Its relationship with the 87th Division was renewed in October 1993 when the Regiment was reconstituted in the Army Reserve as the 348th Regiment comprising three Battalions, all elements of the 87th Division.

It would undergo several reorganizations altering the number and designation of its Battalions, which was set at two, the 2nd and 3rd, in October 1999. In April 2007, its relationship with the 87th Division ended as its two Battalions were relieved from their assignments to it. According to the U.S. Army Reserve’s Web site for the 85th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command, as of Autumn 2023 both Battalions are listed as Combat Sustainment Support Battalions assigned to the 177th Armored Brigade. 2nd Battalion is stationed at Fort Buchanon in Puerto Rico, while 3rd Battalion is at Fort Blanding, Florida.
