U.S. ARMY 340TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. (DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform since the advent of the AGSU in 2018, however.)

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 340th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 340th Infantry Regiment, Organized Reserves on 30 March 1928. It was redesignated for the 340th Regiment on 7 December 1959 and was amended to update the description on 14 September 1999.

The insignia uses imagery and colors to tell the geographic origin of the unit and its combat history. A blue shield with a red engrailed is used Berry and Bourges, cities in the region of France where the unit fought during World War I. Additionally, the shield is adapted from the arms of Bourges, the city closest to where the Regiment was stationed that has a coat of arms. A wolverine on the blue field is a reference to the unit’s allocation to the state of Michigan. “Forward” is the Regimental motto.

Originally constituted in August 1917, the 340th Regiment was assigned to the 85th division in World War I, earning an uninscribed World War I victory streamers for its contribution to victory by providing replacement Soldiers to units already on the front lines when the Regiment arrived in France in July and August of 1918. It was demobilized for a brief period after the war before being reconstituted in the Organized Reserves in 1921 and again assigned to the 85th Division, but was relieved from that assignment in March 1942 before the 85th was deployed to the European-African-Mediterranean Theater.

Disbanded in August 1952, the unit was reconstituted in May 1959 as the 340th Regiment and activated in June as an element of the 85th Division (Training), and for the next five decades its Battalions would be organized as elements of the 85th Division. It would undergo numerous reorganizations over the next five decades, some of them altering the number of Battalions it was made up of and others purely administrative to reflect changes in the 85th Division’s designation (Training, Exercise, Training Support.

In 2002, the 3rd Battalion was allotted to the Regular Army and the remaining Battalions were ordered into active service for the War on Terrorism, and over the next decade, the Regiment’s three Battalions would be selected for two Army Superior Unit Awards apiece. The last major organizational changes came in 2007, when the 1st and 2nd Battalions were relieved from assignment to the 85th Division, and in 2008 when the Regiment was finally organized as a parent regiment in the U.S. Army Regimental System and the 3rd Battalion was also relieved from assignment to the 85th Division.

As of Autumn 2023, the Battalions are serving as Training units in the U.S. Army Reserve. 1st Battalion is assigned to the 181st Infantry Brigade (serving as a Multi-Functional Training Brigade), 85th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command. 2nd Battalion is part of the 4th Cavalry Brigade, First Army Division East, and 3rd Battalion is a Regular Army unit also assigned to the 181st Infantry Brigade as the 3-340th Brigade Engineer Battalion stationed at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.
