U.S. ARMY 337TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly called a unit crest or DUI for short, the 337th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 337th Infantry Regiment on 16 June 1026 and was redesignated for the 337th Regiment on 8 August 1960. Its shield is blue to reflect the unit’s origins in the Infantry branch, while the gold billets (rectangles) are taken from the arms of Nevers, the capital of the Department of Nievre, Cosne which was the first location the Regiment was billeted in World War I. The creature in the center is a wolverine, a ferocious creature long associated with the state of Michigan and thus commemorating the unit’s location when it was reconstituted in 1921.

The motto, VIS ET VIRTUS, is a Latin phrase that translates to "Strength And Courage."

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Regiment was originally constituted as the 337th Infantry in the National Army of the United States on 5 August 1917, a designation it would retain 1959 when it was given its current title and designation. It was assigned to the 85th Division when it was constituted, and it would maintain a relationship with the Division until it was reorganized as a parent regiment in the U.S. Army Regimental System in 2007 and its Battalions relieved from assignment to the 85th.

Like all units assigned to the 85th Division, the 337th Infantry was awarded an uninscribed World War I victory streamer due to the fact that the Division and its components were broken up upon arriving in France in July-August 1918 and used as replacement troops. After demobilization in 1919 and reconstitution in the Organized Reserves in 1921, the Regiment was again assigned to the 85th Division and fought in Italy with the Division, earning three campaign streamers.

From 1959 until 2007 (see above), the Regiment’s units have served as Training Battalions, all of them organized as elements of the 85th Division, with its 1st and 3rd Battalions service in that role being recognized with an Army Superior Unit Award (for the period 2008-2011) and its 2nd Battalion earning two ASUAs, one for the same period and another one for 2004-2006).

As of Autumn 2023, the Regiment’s 2nd Battalion is assigned to the 157th Infantry Brigade, 85th Support Command of the Army Reserve, where it is tasked with Combat Sustainment Support; the 3rd Battalion has a similar job assigned to the 4th Cavalry Brigade, 85th Support Command. The 337th Regiment’s 1st Battalion was previously assigned to the 181st Multi-Functional Training Brigade, but the Battalion is no longer listed among Army Reserve units.
