U.S. ARMY 336TH TRANSPORTATION GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 336th Transportation Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a unit crest or by the initialism DUI, employs brick red and golden yellow coloring to identify the unit as part of the Transportation Corps. “Up Front When It Counts,” the unit motto, embodies the readiness and zeal for service of the Group has show time and again throughout its service history. The gold circle simulates a wheel and thus the primary function of the Group, and lightning flashes in ultramarine blue allude to air transportation.

Formed in 1948 in Chicago, the 336th Transportation Group was headquartered in Forest Park and Milwaukee before settling at Fort Sheridan in Lake Forest, Illinois. During the 1990s, the Group played a critical role in moving millions of tons of ammo from bases that had been closed as part of the “peace dividend” following the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2006, it deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, running dangerous convoy operations over the course of a year that added up to over 50 million miles traveled over the course of the 11-month tour, an achievement which earned the Group a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

On 2 March 2008, the Group cased its colors following its inactivation.

Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively
