U.S. ARMY 334TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Originally approved for the 334th Support Battalion, this Distinctive Unit Insignia is now worn by the members of the 334th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division. Its buff and scarlet tones are the colors associated with Support organizations, and the bayonet in the center memorializes the Battalion’s association with the 34th Infantry Division.

The Battalion’s motto, “Supporting The Attack,” is underscored by the two chevron sections holding up the raised bayonet, and the combination of chevron and bayonet highlights the unit’s “Forward” mission. The black of the scroll and bayonet stand for strength; the red of the chevron is for sacrifice.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 334th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion was constituted in the Iowa Army National Guard on 1 March 1993 as the 334th Support Battalion and assigned to the 34th Infantry Division. It was relieved from that assignment on 1 September 2005 when it was transferred to its current assignment, the 2d Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division.

Because it has such a short history, the Battalion as a whole has not earned credit for participation in a campaign. But the existing units that were used to form the Battalion in 1993 bring quite a list of accomplishments with them. C Company, for instance, has a lineage that includes participation in seven World War II campaigns and the award of a French Croix de Guerre with Palm. Company F’s history goes back even further and includes seventeen campaigns across four wars or conflicts (Philippine Insurrection, both World Wars, and Southwest Asia). And it too received a French Croix de Guerre with Palm, as well as a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) for Southwest Asia (First Gulf War).

But the Battalion as a whole may receive campaign credit in the future for its several deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and its outstanding service while support the War on Terrorism has been recognized with two MUCs Commendations for the Battalion as a whole, and its E Company was individually awarded an MUC for service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom between March 2006 and March 2007.
