U.S. ARMY 332ND TRANSPORTATION BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 332nd Transportation Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), also known as a “unit crest,” was approved for wear on 23 June 2000. It is crafted almost exclusively in brick red and golden yellow tones, branch colors of the Transportation Corps, with scarlet here denoting sacrifice and courage and golden yellow signifying excellence. The wings and arrow are a reference to the air offensive against Japan in which the unit took part during the Second World War. A half-wheel at the base of the shield is based upon an antique Japanese example of a wheel and recalls the “rising sun” symbol of Imperial Japan; it is also an allusion to transportation. “Stalwart” is the Battalion motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Assigned to the 641st Regional Support Group, 143rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, 377th Theater Sustainment Command, the 332nd Transportation Battalion began its service life as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD), 43rd Amphibian Truck Battalion, constituted on 30 June 1944 and activated on 5 July 1944 at Camp Gordon Johnston. It was redesignated as HHD, 43rd Transportation Corps Amphibian Truck Battalion in April 1945 only to be inactivated slightly over a year later on 19 April 1946 on Iwo Jima. For its service in the Pacific, the Battalion was awarded a World War II campaign streamer embroidered AIR OFFEENSIVE, JAPAN.

The Battalion would be redesignated one more time (as the 332nd Transportation Amphibious Battalion) before receiving its current designation of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 332nd Transportation Battalion on 14 December 1952. It would go on to be inactivated for nearly thirty-five years, beginning on 1 December 1965 in New Orleans, Louisiana and ending with activation at Tamp, Florida on 16 September 2000.

Almost seven years later to the day, the Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service performed in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom between 18 May 2007 and 26 November 2007.

The Battalion’s most recent honors came in late 2019, when the HHD was presented with the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence in the U.S. Army Reserve Modification Table of Organization and Equipment (MTOE) Small Category for 2019.
