U.S. ARMY 325TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Now serving as the 325th Brigade Support Battalion and assigned to the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, the 325th Support Battalion was originally constituted as the 25th Medical Battalion and assigned to the 25th Division (later renamed the 25th Infantry Division) on 26 August 1941. Activated on 1 October 1941, the Battalion served in four campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater before war’s end and was tapped for a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for its service in the Luzon campaign.

The Battalion was allotted to the Regular Army in June 1949. Over the next twenty-two years it took part in ten campaigns during the Korean War and a dozen in Vietnam. Its service in Korea was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation and a pair of Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations, and during the Vietnam War it earned two Meritorious Unit Commendations, two Republic of Vietnam (ROV) Cross of Gallantry with Palm decorations, and an ROV Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class. (Two of the Battalion’s Companies, B and D, were also selected for Valorous Unit Awards.)

Since the conversion and redesignation of the 24th Medical Battalion into the 325th Support Battalion in 1992, the unit has officially taken part in one War on Terrorism campaign (Afghanistan), and it may yet be determined to have earned credit for more—and it likely will if the number of Meritorious Unit Commendations the Battalion as whole has received (three) and that its individual companies earned while attached or assigned to other parent organizations: Companies D, E, F, and G have each been awarded two, while Companies A, B, and C have each been selected for one.

Nicknamed “Mustangs,” the 325th Brigade Support Battalion is stationed at U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii. Since 2005, it has been assigned to the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

The maroon and white colors that predominate the 325th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), also known as a unit crest, reveals the unit’s origins in the Medical Corps as the 25th Medical Battalion. A silver pile (downward pointing triangle) resembles a triangular bandage, and the well-known caduceus, or Staff of Hermes, is simulated here—but with a canoe paddle from the Solomon Islands as the rod and a python (for service in the Philippines) and a sea serpent (Central Pacific) replacing the generic serpents.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for the 25th Medical Battalion on 6 August 1953.  On 18 March 1991, it was redesignated for the 325th Support Battalion with revised description and symbolism. Unlike most unit crests, the 325th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia is not inscribed with the organization's motto ("Medical Excellence").

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
