U.S. ARMY 324TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 324th Military Police Battalion was originally constituted on 31 May 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 801st Military Police Battalion and activated at Fort Ord, California on 4 June 1942. It would serve under this designation in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, taking part in two campaigns and earning a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation before being inactivated in the Philippines in 1946. It would be given its current designation as the 324th Military Police Battalion on 11 June 1947 and simultaneously allotted to the Organized Reserves (which became the Organized Reserve Corps in 1948 and then the Army Reserve in 1952).

Following a 1948 reorganization that inactivated several of the Battalion’s companies, the Battalion became the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 324th Military Police Battalion in March 1963. Its location changed several times over the next few decades, ping-ponging twice from Seattle to Fort Lawton between 1947 and 1972 before moving cross-country to Gettysburg, PA in September 1997. In 2000, its location was changed from from Gettysburg to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Ordered into active military service on 10 February 2003, the Battalion was later awarded a Valorous Unit Award for its service during the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2006, the Battalion was again called into active military service, this time being tapped for a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service between 16 October 2006 and 1 September 2007. And in a ceremony held in July 2022 at Fort Hunter-Liggett in California, the 324th Military Police Battalion became the first Army Reserve Military Police Reserve unit in recent years to be commanded by an active-duty Soldier, with Lt. Col. Joel Maxwell being tapped to replace the outgoing Commander Maj. Martin Leopard.

Often referred to as a unit crest or as a DUI for short, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 324th Military Police Battalion was originally approved for the 801st Military Police Battalion on 26 October 1942. It was redesignated for the 324th Military Police Battalion on 1 August 1953.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
