U.S. ARMY 322ND CIVIL AFFAIRS BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Originally constituted in 1945 in the regular Army as the 102nd HQ and HQ Company, Military Government Group at the Presidio of Monterey, California,  the 322nd Civil Affairs Brigade was subsequently designated as the 322nd Military Government Group, allotted to the Army Reserve in September 1955, and activated at Fort DeRussy in Hawaii. It became the 322nd Civil Affairs Group in 1959, a designation it retained for over thirty years until its 1992 redesignation under its current title, 322nd Civil Affairs Brigade. As of Autumn 2023 it is an Army Reserve unit assigned to the 9th Mission Support Command and is headquartered at Fort Shafter, which like Fort DeRussy is located on the island Oahu.

The 322nd Civil Affairs Brigade Designated Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was originally approved on 27 July 1971 and celebrates the both the Brigade’s mission and its home base in Hawaii. A colored, sheathed sword placed atop the intersection of two diagonally crossed swords which rest upon an open scroll sums up the overall mission: perform civil affairs in support of both combat operations (crossed swords) and peaceful, postcombat operations (sheathed sword) that follow. Palm branches are a sign of justice, triumph, and honor, but they also recall the Brigade’s location in Hawaii, as does the motto written in Hawaiian: NO KA PONO O KA LAHUI, or “For The Benefit of Mankind.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
