U.S. ARMY 317TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 317th Military Police  was originally authorized for the 713th Military Police Battalion on 28 October 1942. It was redesignated for the 317th Military Police Battalion on 25 March 1964.

Green and gold, branch colors of the Military Police Corps, are used almost exclusively in the design of the 317th Military Police Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia. A pair of crossed, gold submachine gun barrels convey the policing function of the Battalion: Block the path for authorized people, stop the transgressor, and maintain order through obedience to the law. “Be Just And Fear Not,” the unit motto, succinctly conveys the characteristics of the personnel of the Battalion as they perform their duties.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The unit received its current designation, 317th Military Police Battalion, on 10 March 1947 when it was allotted to the Organized Reserves (later called the Organized Reserve Corps and then Army Reserve). It was reorganized to include the HQ and HQ Detachment on 2 February 1972, with its remaining organic elements concurrently inactivated.

Its HQ relocated to Tampa in 1994, and since that time it has been called into active military service on at least three occasions, earning credit for participation in the Iraqi Sovereignty campaign in the War on Terrorism and a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its HQ and HQ Detachment for service between October 2009 and July 2010.

As of Autumn 2023, the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 317th Military Police Battalion was stationed at Tampa, Florida and was assigned to the 290th Military Police Brigade, 200th Military Police Command. It was first constituted in the Army of the United States on 10 January 1942 as the 713th Military Police, the designation it would serve under while earning battle honors for four campaigns and a Meritorious Unit Commendation during World War II.
