U.S. ARMY 313TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Assigned to the 174th Infantry Brigade, 85th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command and operationally controlled by First Army, the 3rd Battalion (Logistics Support) is the only active component of the 313th Regiment as of May 2021, which at times had comprised up to three Battalions. Originally constituted as the 313th Infantry on 5 August 1917, the Regiment has been allotted to the Army Reserve (previously designated as the Organized Reserves and the Organized Reserve Corps) since 1921.

During World War I, the Regiment was assigned to the 79th Division and fought in two campaigns, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine 1918, before returning to the U.S. and being demobilized at Camp Meade, Maryland I 1919. The Regiment was quickly reconstituted with the same designation and assigned to the same Division in the Organized Reserves in 1921 and was called into active military service in June 1942. It fought in five World War II campaigns in the European Theater, earning a pair of French Croix de Guerre with Palm World War II awards and a French Fourragere World War II, with the Regiment’s 3rd Battalion individually awarded a Presidential Unit Citation (embroidered “Alsace”).

It underwent a major reorganization in April 1959 when it was made a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS) consisting of the 1st Battle Group, an element of the 79th Infantry Division. Its longstanding relationship with the 79th Infantry Division ended in January 1963 when it was reorganized to comprise the 1st Battalion, an element of the 157th Infantry Brigade.

But the 1st Battalion was inactivated in February 1975 and relieved from its assignment the 157th Infantry Brigade. In October 1999, the Regiment was withdrawn from CARS and reorganized in the U.S. Army Regimental System to consist of three Battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd) that were all elements of the 78th Division (Training Support). Its units have been assigned training roles since that time, with all three of the Regiment’s Battalions being tapped for the Army Superior Unit Award for their service between 2008 and 2011.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

The 313th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for the 313tgh Infantry Regiment on 15 June 1927. A motto was added in February 1958 and the symbolism was amended in June 1970 before the insignia was redesignated for the 313th Regiment on 18 August 1999.

The upper half of the shield is taken from the arms of Maryland, the state where the Regiment was first organized, while the bottom half is from the arms of Franche-Comte, the unit’s training area in France during World War I. A falcon in the center is a reference to Montfaucon, site of a famous battle during the Meuse-Argonne offensive that was the Regiment’s principal action during the First World War. The Regimental motto is VIRTUTE ET FIDE, a Latin phrase that translates in English as “By Bravery And Faith.”
