U.S. ARMY 311TH SUSTAINMENT COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

The unit motto “Provide Maintain Sustain” sums up the mission of the 311th Sustainment Command, an Army Reserve unit headquartered in Los Angeles and a subordinate unit of the 79th Theater Sustainment Command.

The words are inscribed on the 311th Sustainment Command Distinctive Unit Insignia that was originally approved for the 311th Logistical Command in 1970. Buff and scarlet are used extensively in the insignia to reflect the organization’s status as a Support unit. A horizonal key, a longtime symbol for Quartermaster functions, refers to Provide; the chevron has been a symbol of support for centuries and alludes to Sustain; and the wrench is associated with Maintain. Behind these images is a pair of wings, a reference to angel wings as in the “City of Angels,” the unit’s home of Los Angeles.

Deployed to Afghanistan in December 2012, the personnel of the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command proved how seriously they take the unit motto, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) for serving with “unprecedented distinction” in the process. Permanent Order 305-07, describing the Command’s service, states that “the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 311th Sustainment Command developed and executed a world-class campaign plan, bridging the strategic and tactical levels and increasing logistical and retrograde velocity while saving over $10 million for the American taxpayers.” (Note: The award of the MUC has not received final confirmation in an Army General Order.)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
