U.S. ARMY 311TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. (DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.)

The 311th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 15 April 1982. Silver gray (white) and oriental blue, the colors of the checkered field in the insignia suggests the gathering of data to aid in the formulation of military strategy, while  the lightning bolts refer to the use of electronics in the gathering operation. The dragon is a reference to service in Vietnam, and its scarlet color alludes to the award of three Meritorious Unit Commendations to elements of the Battalion. The fleurs-de-lis denote service in Europe during World War II.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

The 311th Military Intelligence Battalion’s lineage begins with the constitution of the 311th Communication Reconnaissance Battalion on 1 June 1954 in the Regular Army, and the only battle honors or military decorations for the Battalion as a whole are limited to those earned in the Southwest Asia conflict (aka “First Gulf War”)—three campaigns and one Meritorious Unit Commendation, to be precise.

But the history and lineage of the two units that were designated in 1982 as its A and B companies—the 265th Army Security Agency Company and 101st Military Intelligence Company, respectively—include battle honors (campaign credits) and decorations from both World War II and the Vietnam War. Company A (265th Army Security Agency Company) is credited with taking part in thirteen campaigns in Vietnam and, for service in the same conflict, was awarded three Meritorious Unit Commendations, four Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm medals, and a Republic of Vietnam Civil action Honor Medal, First Class.

Company B’s history (101st Military Intelligence Company) includes four campaign in World War II (three of which included participation in an assault landing) and eleven in Vietnam. Its World War II military decorations include a Presidential Unit Citation for the Battle of the Bulge, a French Croix de Guerre with Palm for the assault landing at Normandy, a Netherlands Orange Lanyard, a Belgian Croix de Guerre with Palm (for actions at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge), a Belgian Fourragere for two citations in the Belgian Army Order of the Day (FRANCE and BELGIUM). For its service in Vietnam, the Company was chosen for a pair of Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm awards and a Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class.

As of April 2023, the 311th Military Intelligence Battalion is assigned to the 500th Military Intelligence Brigade and is headquartered at Camp Zama in Japan.
