U.S. ARMY 30TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 30th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, frequently referred to as a “unit crest” or just DUI for short, was approved on 6 March 1963. The unit motto is a reference to the Regiment’s valiant and history-changing service with the 3rd Division during the Second Battle of the Marne, which halted and then repelled the last major German offensive of the war; the Division and its component units were nicknamed “Rock of the Marne” for their defensive stand in the face of far superior numbers.

The Regiment’s affiliation with the 3rd Division is indicated by the  facsimile of the Division's unit patch in the canton (small square area) in the upper left of the shield. A broken chevron stands for the role played by the Regiment in repulsing the German drive at the Marne in July of 1918, while a boar's head is used to indicate the Regiment's breakthrough in the German lines and the subsequent occupation of enemy territory.

Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

This historic battle was not the Regiment’s first taste of combat. Originally constituted in the Regular Army as the 30th Infantry in 1901, the Regiment was deployed to the Philippines and fought in the Mindoro Campaign 1901. It took part in six of the named U.S. Army campaigns during World War I and was awarded a French Croix de Guerre with Palm for its service. During World War II, the Regiment garnered an impressive ten campaign streamers, four adorned with Arrowhead devices for taking part in assault landings—the same number of Presidential Unit Citations it received. It was also the recipient of two more French Croix de Guerre with Palm and French Fourragere.

The total number of War on Terrorism campaigns for which the Regiment will receive participation credit has yet to be determined, but since 2003 the Regiment’s bravery and courage has been recognized with a Presidential Unit Citation, and its 1st and 2nd Battalions have been honored with a total of four Valorous Unit Awards, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, and an Army Superior Unit Award.

As of Summer 2023, the 30th Infantry Regiment is represented by a single active unit, 2nd Battalion. It is
assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division and is stationed at the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk, Louisiana.
