U.S. ARMY 309TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 309th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 309th Army Security Agency Battalion, Army Reserve on 12 February 1959. It was assigned for use by the 325th U.S. Army Security Agency Battalion on 5 August 1959, then was reassigned for use by the 209th Army Security Agency Battalion on 2 August 1965. It was given its current designation on 2 May 1990.

A shield made up of teal blue and silver reflects the organization’s founding in the U.S. Army Security Agency. They key is a symbol of the unit’s mission of ensuring security, while the golden bear’s head on top; of the key is a reference to the state of California, site of the unit’s activation. Two lightning flashes positioned saltirewise (i.e., to form an “X” shape) allude to electricity to emphasize the importance of electronic communications in carrying out unit functions. “Sentinels Of Security” serves as both the unit motto and an apt description of the Battalion’s function.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
