U.S. ARMY 306TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also called a DUI or a “unit crest,” the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 306th Military Police Battalion was approved on 25 February 1959 and was subsequently amended to revise the description and symbolism on 12 April 1991.

The shield portion of the insignia is divided into green and yellow, signifying the unit’s status as a Military Police organization. A golden scimitar in the green half of the shield is an allusion to the unit’s World War II battle honors for its outstanding service while supporting the Persian Gulf Command.

In the upper right is an Algonquin warrior in profile, emblematic of the organization’s geographical location in upstate New York—an area once inhabited by tribes of that Native American. The Battalion motto, QUTTIANUM, is the Algonquin word for “Honor,” a characteristic of the tribe and an attribute proudly held by the Battalion.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

A United States Army Reserve Unit, the 306th Military Police Battalion has been called into active Federal service at least twice since the launch of the War on Terrorism. In March 2008, the HQ and HQ Company (HHC), 306th Military Police Battalion was named the recipient of a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) for its outstanding service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom between 21 December 2004 and 3 November 2005 while assigned to the 18th Military Police Brigade. The Battalion’s HHC was tapped for a second MUC in December 2009, this time for its superior performance in handling detainee operations at Camp Bucca in Iraq.

It is unclear if the Battalion is still active. It was last assigned to the 333rd Military Police Brigade, 200th Military Police Command, United States Army Reserve and headquartered in Uniondale, New York.
