U.S. ARMY 301ST REGIONAL SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 301st Regional Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as a “unit crest” or DUI, was originally approved for the 301st Support Brigade on 31 March 1970 and was redesignated for the 301st Support Group on 4 April 1972. A chain forming a circle is a reference to the unit motto “The Unbroken Chain” and also serves as a framing device for the focal point of the insignia, three chevrons rendered in red, white, and blue placed above a vertically oriented rectangle.

The chevron is a centuries-old symbol of support; the rectangle depicts a billet, a heraldic symbol indicating supply and service capabilities. The placement of the chevrons, one above another, recalls the motto of New York (EXCELSIOR, meaning “Ever Upward”) which was its home state at the time the unit crest was authorized.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
