U.S. ARMY 2ND AIR DEFENSE ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Though organized on 1 June 1821 as the 2nd Regiment of Artillery, the 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) was not approved until 24 November 1924 while the unit was designated as the 2nd Coast Artillery. The insignia’s design is a tribute to the Regiment's actions during the Civil War, with an American eagle perched atop a saltire taken from the Confederate flag. Similarly, “FIDUS ULTRA FINEM,” Latin for “Faithful Beyond The End,” was approved as the unit motto while the Regiment was still known as the 2nd Coast Artillery.

Although a total of five battalions were activated under the banner of the 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, today the only active battalion is the 3rd, which has three active batteries. Battery A and Battery D are based at Fort Sill along with the Regimental HQ, all of which are subordinate units of the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
