U.S. ARMY 298TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 298th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was originally approved for the 298th Maintenance Battalion on 11 September 1970. It has been redesignated for several times since then, the first occasion being 15 May 1972 when it was redesignated for the 298th Composite Battalion. Less than a year later it was redesignated for the 298th Service Battalion, on 22 March 1973, and before the year was out it was redesignated for the 298th Maintenance Battalion on 16 November 1973. It was given its current designation on 29 April 1996.

Mechanical images abound on the 298th Support Battalion unit crest, reflecting the unit’s past service as a Tank Battalion and as a Maintenance organization. A green driving tank sprocket with gauntlet is a reference to the unit’s service in Germany and Central Europe during World War II; the gauntlet is also an allusion to the administrative functions of the unit.  A set of wrenches and a gear is a reference to weapons maintenance and transportation supply duties. IRE IN ADVERSA, the unit motto, is Latin for “To Advance Against Adversities.” This motto was also used by the 740th Tank Battalion and the 108th Armored Cavalry prior to the 298th Support Battalion.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
