U.S. ARMY 293RD INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Nicknamed "Third Indiana," the 293rd Infantry Regiment is a component of the Indiana Army National Guard. Its 1st Battalion is assigned to the 76th Brigade Combat Team and stands ready to organize and train in order to deploy anywhere in the world; before the 2nd Battalion was inactivated, it had units stationed in several Indiana cities including Frankfort, Indianapolis, Logansport, Monticello, and Peru.

Approved on 22 October 1963, the 293rd Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia—more widely recognized as a “unit crest” or DUI—pays homage to the organization’s service in four different wars. A snake taken from the coat of arms of Mexico, represents service in the Mexican War. A rock with a seven-pointed mullet (star) is emblematic of the Battle of Chickamauga, with the star’s representing seven battle honors earned during that conflict. The insignia was amended in April 1978 to correct the symbolism.

On the right side is a Lorraine cross that recalls service if France during World War I, and a palm tree at the bottom symbolizes action in the Pacific Theater; its three leaves stand for the battle honors the unit was subsequently awarded. Yellow and red in the chief of the insignia are the colors of the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation the Regiment was awarded. A bayonet, always associated with Infantry and combat, embodies the fighting capabilities of the unit. “Follow Us” is the motto of the Battalion.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
