U.S. ARMY 285TH AVIATION REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 285th Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a DUI or unit crest, was approved 1 October 1987. Its ultramarine blue and golden orange colors are the official branch colors of Army Aviation, and the hawk on the blue shield is an emblem of aggressive action and the reconnaissance capabilities of Army combat aviators. The red and yellow chief (top third of shield) is taken from the state flag of Arizona, the unit’s home location its primary theater of operation; it’s also alluded to in the unit motto, “Desert Hawks.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

First organized and Federally recognized in the Arizona Army National Guard as Detachment 1, Company D, 149th Aviation Battalion, an element of the 49th Armored Division, the 285th Aviation Regiment was reorganized and redesignated several times before achieving its Regimental designation on 1 October 2005.

Consisting of the 1st and 2nd Battalions, the Regiment’s units were allotted to the Arizona, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Utah Army National Guard at the time, and the following year 1st Battalion was called into active Federal service from May to November 2006. Three years later, its excellence was recognized with an Army Superior Unit Award, specifically given because it had become the first (and at that time only) Reserve Component Apache Longbow Attack Helicopter Battalion to successfully complete the Active Component Apache Longbow Helicopter Unit Fielding and Training Program.

In 2010, the Regiment’s 2nd Battalion was assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade as part of Task Force 12, which conducted full-spectrum aviation operations in the United States Division-South, assisting the Task Force in moving nearly 5 million pounds of cargo and circulated 75,000 personnel. It also trained Iraqi Security Forces and the Iraqi Air Force, helping them achieve new levels of professionalism and contributing to the ability for fair and free parliamentary elections to be held. For its service in this role between January and August 2010, the 2nd Battalion was tapped for a Meritorious Unit Commendation on 23 December 2010.
