U.S. ARMY 280TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 280th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 6 June 1978. Orange and white (silver), branch colors of the Signal Corps, are the tones used exclusively for its design. Its three lightning flashes allude to both communications and the speed at which they are delivered. The combination of three create a strong foundation whose versatility and scope is reflected in the branching out of the flashes. A laurel wreath is a sign of excellent achievement, and the three guiding principles of the organization found in the motto—Honor, Duty, Constancy—match the number of lightning flashes and guide the unit as it successfully fulfill its assignments.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 280th Signal Battalion spent the first three-and-a-half decades of its service life as an Artillery organization, originally organized and Federally recognized on 8 July 1936 in the Delaware National Guard as Battery B, 261st Coast Artillery Battalion. Other roles it was designated to perform include service as an Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, Automatic Weapons Battalion, and a Transportation Battalion.

It wasn’t until November 1971 that Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 280th Signal Battalion was created through the conversion and redesignation of the HQ and HQ Detachment, 198th Transportation Battalion. In April 1979, it was redesignated as HQ and HQ Company, 280th Signal Battalion, the title it would retain for the remainder of its existence. On 1 September 2007, the Battalion was consolidated with HHD, 198th Signal Battalion and the newly created unit reorganized in the Delaware and South Carolina Army National Guard as the 198th Signal Battalion.
