U.S. ARMY 277TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 277th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called “unit crest” or a DUI, was originally approved for the 277th Quartermaster Battalion on 20 October 1942 but was rescinded on 29 September 1976. It was redesignated for the 277th Support Battalion, with revised description and symbolism, on 16 September 2005. It is currently worn by personnel in the 277th Aviation Support Battalion.

A chevron-like division in the shield portion of the insignia obviously connotes support, but here it also suggests a wedge of forces surging into territory held by the enemy. The blazing torch represents service for freedom and liberty and is suggestive of the enthusiasm and zeal of Battalion personnel when those objectives are in view, reinforcing the unit motto “Service For Freedom And Liberty.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
