U.S. ARMY 265TH SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

“Building For The Future,” the motto seen on the 256th Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, reflects the organization’s past service as the 256th Engineer Group, Georgia Army National Guard at the time this insignia was approved on 16 November 1971. The unit would go on to be redesignated as the 256th Regional Support Group. After more than 50 years of continuous operation and combat service in Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, the 265th Regional Support Group, Georgia Army National Guard was deactivated during a ceremony at the Oglethorpe Armory in Ellenwood, Georgia held on 9 April 2016.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

In the insignia, the castle towers are emblematic of the Corps of Engineers, while the sword connotes combat; it also is a symbol of leadership and authority, a reference to the overall mission and capabilities of the 256th Engineer Group. The design recalls the arch and the three columns found on State Seal of Georgia and is a reference to Atlanta, home of the unit at the time.
