U.S. ARMY 261ST SIGNAL BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Properly interpreted, the information derived from enemy communications transmissions intercepted by Signal Corps teams can often give Army Intelligence analysts the ability to peer into the future, an outcome described by the 261st Signal Brigade’s aspirational and motivational motto “Foresee.” It forms the base of the Brigade’s Distinctive Unit Insignia that was originally approved for the 261st Signal Command on 31 August 1979, but which has been redesignated (with new descriptions of the symbolism) for the 261st Signal Brigade. (During its 2008 deployment to Iraq, the Brigade was temporarily designated as the 261st Theater Tactical Signal Brigade (TTSB), a unit encompassed personnel  from other states and active duty Army personnel, but as of Autumn 2023 the unit still appends "TTSB" to its designation)

As with all non-subdued Signal Corps heraldry, the branch colors of orange and white are featured predominantly. Four white flashes that enwrap most of the insignia stand for the four “C’s” of today’s Signal Corps organizations: Command and Control, Communications, and Computers. A white star embedded in a blue diamond (lozenge) is a symbol of the Brigade’s home state of Delaware; the blue diamond recalls the state flag, while the star refers to the capital city of Dover. (Note: The unit has been nicknamed “Diamond Brigade.”) Orange flashes represent the electronic dissemination and direction of communications over vast areas.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
