U.S. ARMY 25TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 25th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia—often called a unit crest or simply DUI—was originally approved for the Regiment on 29 March 1935; it has been redesignated several times in conjunction with the unit’s redesignations. It features a red shield, the Artillery branch color, with a sea lion in its center. The sea lion is taken from the coat of arms of the Philippine Islands, home of the Regiment for a brief period in the early 1920s (the Regiment was officially designated as “Philippine Scouts” from 1920 to 1930). “TACE ET FACE,” the unit motto, is Latin for “Be Silent And Act.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Officially constituted in the National Army as the 25th Field Artillery on 5 July 1918 and assigned to the 9th Division, the unit that was given the official special designation of “Wolfpack” did not see combat until World War II. Redesignated as the 25th Field Artillery Battalion, the unit fought in five World War II campaigns in the European Theater. After redesignation in the Combat Arms Regimental System as the 25th Artillery in 1959, the Regiment was deployed to Vietnam and was credited with participation in eleven of the conflict’s seventeen named campaigns; it was also awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations.

In 1988 the unit received its current Regimental status in the U.S. Army Regimental System and shortly thereafter deployed in support of the First Gulf War, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation and battle honors for three campaigns. Since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the Regiment’s 4th and 5th Battalions have each been honored with three Meritorious Unit Commendations, and the 5th was also recognized for exceptional service in a non-combat role with an Army Superior Unit Award for 2012 – 2013. (Battery B, 5th Battalion also earned an individual MUC).

The 4th Battalion was inactivated in 2014, leaving the 5th as the Regiment’s only active battalion. It is assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division and is based at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
