U.S. ARMY 258TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

With a history that dates back to 9 October 1809 and the constitution of the 4th Regiment of Artillery in the New York State Militia, the 258th Field Artillery Regiment is one of our nation’s oldest existing National Guard units—and with a history that lengthy, providing anything more than the most generalized account of the Regiment’s history and lineage is all but pointless. All told, the Regiment as a whole is credited with participation in an amazing 40 campaigns—16 from World War II alone—and that doesn’t count four campaigns from World War I and a pair from World War II that are credited individually to the Regiment’s HQ Battery of the 1st Battalion.

As of Summer 2023, the 258th Field Artillery Regiment is still allotted to the New York Army National Guard in the form of the 1st Battalion, which comprises a HQ and HQ Battery based in the New York City neighborhood of Jamaica in Queens, three Batteries (A, B, C), and a Support unit (Company F, 427th Brigade Support Battalion).

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The shield portion of the 258th Field Artillery Regiment DUI is the actually the shield of George Washington that has been modified by reversing the colors and using gray (instead of silver) piped with gold and making the shield red for Artillery. This modification was made due to a little known stricture of U.S. Army heraldry and insignias: the arms of the Father of our Country are not to be borne by any organization. The inspiration for these particular changes to accommodate the rule is because of a longstanding tradition that one company of this Regiment paraded as an escort to General Washington on his inauguration day of 30 April 1789. The Company assumed the title “Washington Grays” because of the gray uniforms they wore during this solemn event; the name is now the official special designation for the entire 258th Field Artillery Regiment.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
