U.S. ARMY 256TH COMBAT SUPPORT HOSPITAL UNIT CREST (DUI)

Based in Twinsburg, Ohio, the 256th Combat Support Hospital (CSH) is one of two CSH in the Army Reserve’s 307th Medical Brigade, 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support). The successor to the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, the CSH (pronounced “cash”) is the intermediate treatment facility between frontline battlefield medicine units such as Battalion Aid Stations and Forward Surgical Teams and larger, established medical facilities either in the region, at a U.S. military base, or in the Continental United states.

While a CSH that is fully staffed can have over 600 personnel and almost 250 beds, the organization employs a modular design so that smaller, self-sufficient elements can be deployed as needed. However, in March 2018 the 256th Combat Support Hospital was named a Ready Force X unit, a classification for Army Reserve units that are required to be prepared for a full deployment within weeks or even days.

To ready itself to meet this standard, the 256th CSH took part in Combat Support Training Exercise 18-03 held at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. The focus was on basic soldier skills during the exercise, with training segments devoted to team movement, chemical-agent detection, choosing hasty fighting positions, and responding to indirect fire, to name just a few key areas covered in the session. All the while, of course, the members of the 256th also remembered their three foremost mission goals, as summed up in their unit motto: "Save, Strengthen, Support."

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
