U.S. ARMY 244TH QUARTERMASTER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Assigned to the 23rd Quartermaster Brigade, U.S. Army Quartermaster School and stationed at Fort Gregg-Adams (named Fort Lee prior to Spring 2023) in Virginia, the 244th Quartermaster Battalion trains and supports five Companies that provide Advanced Individual Training to Soldiers in the 92A and 92Y Military Occupational Specialties, including fields such as unit supply, use of automated Logistics systems, and warehouse operations.

It was originally constituted as the 244th Quartermaster Service Battalion on 12 January 1942 and activated at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 25 January 1942, consisting of four Quartermaster Service Companies. The Battalion took part in three campaigns in the European Theater during World War II, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation (with European Theater streamer) and a French Croix de Guerre with Palm (Normandy). It was inactivated in Germany in September 1946. The Battalion was redesignated as the 244th Quartermaster Battalion and was concurrently reactivated at For Lee, Virginia on 8 November 1961.

Inactivated for a brief time before reactivation at Fort Campbell, Kentucky on 24 June 1963, the Battalion’s next inactivation on 17 June 1965 was followed by the formation of two direct support Quartermaster Companies, the 624th and 625th. More than two decades elapsed before the unit was again activated at Fort Lee on 12 February 1987, joining the 23rd Quartermaster Brigade, and assumed the former composite/training mission of 4th Battalion, Quartermaster Brigade after its deactivation. It now consisted of a total of seven Companies, one of which was the 392nd Army Band. The Battalion underwent several realignments over the next several decades before reaching its current five-company organization, with administrative support and control provided by the Logistics Training Department.

The blue and buff tones seen in the 244th Quartermaster Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, are the official branch colors of the Quartermaster Corps. In the shield portion of the insignia is a wheel in the center and a chain in chief (upper third of shield), that graphically illustrate the supply and support functions of the unit. The green stripe on the left and the red stripe on the right are allusions to the unit’s World War II military decorations, while the three links in the chain denote the battle honors earned by the unit in World War. SI NON PROTESTIS POSSUMUS, the unit motto, is a Latin phrase that translates into English as “If You Can’t, We Can.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved 10 April 1964.
