U.S. ARMY 242ND ORDNANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

HQ and HQ Detachment, 242nd Ordnance Battalion was constituted under that same designation on 10 June 1943. Although it was redesignated as the 242nd Maintenance Battalion in 1967 and would keep that title for over 38 years, it would be active for a mere 21 months of that span. When it finally was activated again on 16 June 2005, it was under its original designation.

One of the periods when the Battalion was not inactivated was during World War II. Activated on 25 June 1943 at the Ordnance Unit Training Center in Mississippi, the Battalion went on to serve in the European Theater and earn campaign streamers for participation in the Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland campaigns. During deployments in support of the War on Terrorism, the Battalion was honored with a Valorous Unit Award for service in Kandahar and Parwan provinces in 2013 – 2014 and in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010 – 2011.

The 242nd Ordnance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia vwas approved on 2 January 1968 while the Battalion was still a Maintenance unit; the imagery reflects both the unit motto of “Fast Tough Efficient” and the missions of the organizations. A wrench is associated with mechanical repairs and thus the Maintenance function, and the cogwheel is a symbol of the Battalion’s unyielding determination to ensure that “wheels keep turning.” The lightning flashes (“Fast”) and gauntlet (“Tough”) serve to reiterate the unit motto.

Also referred to as a unit crest or a DYU, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
