U.S. ARMY 238TH AVIATION REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 238th Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a DUI or a unit crest, was originally approved for the 238th Aviation Battalion on 15 November 1963. A correction to the description was made in December 1963, and it was subsequently redesignated for the 238th Aviation Battalion, with revised description and symbolism, on 1 October 1987.

Teal blue and white (silver) are used almost exclusively in this insignia; at one time they were the colors associated with Aviation organizations. A pair of wings symbolize flight operations, and an annulet (circle) is an allusion to an eyelet—an “item” for securing and a “place” for observation. Inside the annulet is a saltire cross, a reference to Indiana’s nickname as the “Crossroads of America.” Additionally, “X” has long been used as the way to designate a specific location, and in that vein it serves as a reference to the unit’s recon activities. “Eye Of The Cyclone” is the Regimental motto.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

While the Regiment as a whole has not been awarded any military decorations, individual companies within the 2nd and 3rd Battalions have been tapped for honors. Companies C and B of 2nd Battalion were respectively tapped for a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) and a Valorous Unit Award, while 3rd Battalion’s Company C has been awarded a pair of MUCs and Company A was chosen for one. Additionally, Company F, not attached to any of the Regiment’s Battalions, was the first of the Regiment’s component units to earn a military decoration in the War on Terrorism, being named an MUC recipient in September 2006 for its service between January and November 2005.

As of Autumn 2023, the 238th Aviation Regiment comprises two Battalions, the 2nd and the 3rd. The 2nd Battalion is assigned to the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade, Indiana Army National Guard, while the 3rd Battalion is assigned to the Michigan Army National Guard and is based in Grand Ledge, Michigan.
