U.S. ARMY 232ND MEDICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, the 232nd Medical Battalion is a subordinate unit of the 32nd Medical Brigade that is tasked with training Combat Medic Leaders. In addition to its Headquarters Company, which includes the Department of Combat Medic Training, it comprises six Companies providing training for the 68W MOS (Combat Medic) and a Reception/Recovery Company.

The 232nd Medical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was authorized on 29 February 1988. Maroon and white, colors of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, are used for the bottom two-thirds of the insignia’s escutcheon (shield). The maroon cross is a longtime symbol of care and healing; the acorn and oak leaves superimposed on its center represent strength, endurance, and possibility. Two crossed swords in the chief (upper third of shield) denote combat readiness and recall the two wars (WW II and Korean War) in which units in the Battalion’s lineage were awarded battle honors. “Soldier Medic,” the unit motto, highlights the Battalion’s specialized training for Combat Medics.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
