U.S. ARMY 230TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 230th Signal Battalion was originally constituted February 1959 in the Tennessee Army National Guard as the 230th Signal Battalion and assigned to the 30th Armored Division. Organized 1 March 1959 from existing units in the western region of Tennessee, the Battalion was headquartered at Jackson until 1 November 1973, when its Headquarters and Headquarters Company were reorganized and redesignated as HQ and HQ Detachment, 230th Signal Battalion and were relieved from assignment to the 30th Armored Division. At the same time, the location of the HHC was changed from Jackson to Humboldt, with the remainder of the Battalion starting new lineages from this point forward.

On 1 April 1980, it was reorganized and redesignated in the North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia Army National Guard as the 230th Signal Battalion with Headquarters at Humboldt, Tennessee. Over a dozen years elapsed before the unit was reorganized on 16 April 1993 in the North Carolina and Tennessee Army National Guard. It would be reorganized again on 1 October 1996 in the Tennessee and New York Army National Guard. As of Autumn 2023, the 230th Signal Battalion is headquartered in Humboldt, Tennessee.

The 230th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was first approved on 2 October 1967. It was amended to revise the symbolism in order to accurately reflect historic events on 18 August 1981.

The Battalions original assignment to the 30th Armored Division is symbolized the inclusion of the color yellow, while the wavy bendlet is a reference to overseas duty; the two divisions of the shield are for participation in World Wars I and II by the existing units used to organize the Battalion. Similarly, four fleurs-de-lis are for European service. A lightning bolt is an emblem of speed and direct action, hallmarks of the efficiency of 20th-century Signal Communications.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
