2291ST U.S. ARMY HOSPITAL UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 2291st U.S. Army Hospital Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 25 February 1969. Maroon and white, branch colors of the Army Medical Department, are used in the insignia in a green cross surmounted by a white letter “O” and surrounded by a continuous maroon scroll. The pear-shape of the scroll symbolizes the human heart, while the green cross is a reference to the expedition of Christopher Columbus, namesake of the organization’s original home city of Columbus, Ohio. In heraldry, green is the color of life and health; besides serving as the initial letter of “Ohio,” the “O” is a life ring and is an allusion to the saving of lives. "Versatile Skilled Strong" was the organizational motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
