U.S. ARMY 229TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCED BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 225th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a “unit crest” or DUI, was originally approved for the 29th Military Intelligence Battalion on 25 November 1985 and was subsequently redesignated for the 229th Military Intelligence Battalion on 29 January 1996. Its oriental blue and silver gray tones are the official branch colors of the Military Intelligence Corps.

In the shield portion of the insignia are a pair of griffins, mythical creatures that are part eagle, part lion which are renowned for their keen eyesight, symbolizing surveillance. Because the griffins are back to back, they can see all areas at once and thus represent vigilance; the configuration also suggests the Battalion’s area of operations, which includes two continents and two oceans. The wavy, vertical lines form a heraldic pale that is a reference to the Panama Canal. “Strength From Intelligence” is the unit motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
