U.S. ARMY 222ND FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 222nd Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved on 8 May 1933 while the Regiment carried the same U.S. Army designation as it has today. The title was changed to reflect the unit’s change in designation status to 222nd Field Artillery Battalion on 26 August 1942 and again on 9 May 1961 when the unit became the 222nd Artillery Regiment. The insignia was redesignated one last time when the Regiment was given its full, current designation—222nd Field Artillery Regiment, Utah Army National Guard—on 24 July 1972.

The insignia is a rendering of one side of the Mormon Battalion Monument in Salt Lake City, Utah, which commemorates the sacrifices made by 500 Mormon pioneer volunteers who joined the U.S. Army during the Mexican War (1846-1847). Dedicated in 1927, the 100-foot monument was sculpted from rose pink granite and overlaid with bronze by Gilbert Riswold. A figure from a distinct period of the Battalion’s history appears on each side of the monument.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. G
uidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted on 8 March 1894 as the Squadron of Cavalry in the Utah National Guard, the Regiment was not assigned to the Artillery branch until it was consolidated with Battery A, Field Artillery in June-July 1917 to form the 1st Field Artillery. It would first be assigned its current numerical designation in 1924 when it became 1st Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery, an element of the 40th Division; July 1972 is the date it was given its current designation.

The Regiment’s campaign participation credits include World War I (streamer uninscribed) and eight World War II campaigns five in the European Theater and three in the Asiatic-Pacific; it was also awarded an Arrowhead device for taking part in an assault landing during the Luzon campaign. While several of the Battalion’s component units have received individual military decorations, the sole military decoration designated for the entire Regiment is a Presidential Unit Citation earned during the Korean War.

As of Autumn 2023, the 222nd Field Artillery Regiment comprises the 2nd Battalion and is assigned to the 65th Field Artillery Brigade. Its Headquarters and Headquarters Battery are based at the Cedar City Armory in Cedar City, Utah.
