U.S. ARMY 21ST THEATER SUSTAINMENT COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Technically known as a Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI for short), the unit crest of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command pays homage to its birthplace, headquarters, and the first geographical area for which it provided its support services. A blue horizontal band in the middle of the Crest, or Distinctive Unit Insignia, is an allusion to the Rhine River Valley; the vertical, double-hooked arrow—symbol for a wolf-trap—is taken from the arms of the city of Mannheim, where the Command was first activated. The Command’s deep understanding of the importance of its mission is underscored by the inclusion of its motto, “First In Support,” at the base of the Crest.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Although an argument can be made that 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s genesis lies in the establishment of U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) as a separate command to oversee and manage logistics in what was designated U.S. Army Communications Zone Europe, its lineage can be unquestioningly traced to the formation and activation of the 1st Support Brigade. The Brigade provided support services not handled directly by U.S. Army Europe of Theater Army Support Command (TASCOM), typically in rear areas.

In 1970, the Brigade was reassigned as a major subordinate headquarters of TASCOM, and in 1974 it was reorganized based upon recommendations of Project CHASE (Consolidation of Headquarters and Area Support Elements) that led to the merger of TASCOM and USAREUR. Its missions were expanded to encompass base-operations support for eight military communities in addition to the management of area support, and it was relocated from Mannheim to Kaiserlautern.

Two years later, the Brigade was upgraded to a two-star Command and redesignated as 21st Support Command (SUPCOM), a major subordinate unit of USAREUR. Subsequent redesignations were to 21st Theater Army Area Command (21st TAACOM, 1988), 21st Theater Support Command (21st TSC, 2000), and its current designation in 2007.
