U.S. ARMY 21ST CAVALRY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

A shield divided into two sections—similar to the design of its Shoulder Sleeve Insignia / Combat Service ID Badge—is the centerpiece of the 21st Cavalry Brigade’s Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), more frequently referred to as a unit crest. The motto of IMPETUM PERSEQUI—Latin for “Continue the Attack”—is emblazoned across the bottom of a badge-like device which the shield rests upon. The eagle in the upper half of the shield represents the brigade’s mission of aviation training; the star in the bottom half stands for the state of Texas, home of the brigade’s location for its 30-year existence.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 21st Cavalry Brigade served as the Army’s training brigade specializing in Apache helicopters. It trained and fielded all U.S. Army attack aviation units, and it also trained pilots from Allied nations who were moving to the AH-64 platform from other fixed-wing aircraft. Over the decades, it’s estimated that the number of personnel the Brigade trained could field more than 80 battalion-sized units, as the Brigade worked with every Apache unit in the active-duty Army and nearly all of the those in the reserve components.

On 21 July 2014, the Brigade’s pilots and aircrews closed the 30-year chapter of Apache helicopter training with one final flight before turning in the last half-dozen AH-64D helicopters still at their disposal as the unit was inactivated.
