U.S. ARMY 215TH FINANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 215th Finance Battalion is a unit in the Army of the United States that has been inactivated, deactivated, disbanded, redesignated, or consolidated with another unit and given a new designation. It was originally constituted on 1 November 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana as the 15th Finance Section and was subsequently redesignated as the 15th Finance Disbursing Section. Deployed to the European Theater during World War II, it would take part in five campaigns before inactivation in January 1947.

After reactivation in October 1950, the unit would undergo several redesignations as the 15th Finance Section (June 1965), 15th Area Finance Support Center (May 1984), 15th Finance Support Unit (April 1987), and 215th Finance Support (October 1988) before its final reorganization and redesignation as the 215th Finance Support Battalion at Ford Hood, Texas in October 1992. It is unclear how the unit earned the official Special Designation of “Double Eagles” or when and under what circumstances it became inactive, except that it likely occurred after June 2003, the date of an amendment to the description on its unit crest.

First approved on 11 March 1993, the 215th Finance Battalion Unit Crest employs silver gray and golden yellow colors to denote its status as part of the Army’s Finance Corps. The imagery on the shield commemorates the unit’s World War II service in Europe as the 15th Finance Disbursing Section, with a fleur-de-lis on a blue field signifying service in France and a castle denoting wartime service in Central Europe. Five fusils (diamond shapes) recall the branch insignia of the Finance Corps; each represents a campaign and is colored red to indicate service under fire. “A Tradition Of Excellence” was the Battalion motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
