U.S. ARMY 214TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (unit crest) of the 214th Field Artillery Regiment, a Georgia Army National Guard unit, was approved on 31 July 1972 when it was redesignated from the 214th Artillery Regiment. Prior to that time, the insignia had been approved for the 214th Coast Artillery (AntiAircraft) from 2 July 1940 to 7 March 1951, followed by the 950th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion from March 1951 until 25 April 1961. This was nearly 100 years before the organization of the oldest units in the Regiment’s lineage, the 1st and 2d Battalions, Georgia Cavalry, which eventually formed the Confederate Army’s 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment and earned credit for participation in five Civil War campaigns.

Some of this history is reflected in the design of and elements found on the 214th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia. A scarlet shield reflects the unit’s designation as a Coast Artillery unit at the time the insignia was approved. The blue chevronel reflects the Infantry provenance of some of the Regiment’s forebears and is a symbol of strength. Three bursting shells on the red shield denote the mission of antiaircraft artillery, reinforced by the motto "We Hear And Strike."

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

As a whole, the Regiment’s only non-Civil War campaign credits are from the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II, where it fought in six campaigns and earned a Presidential Unit Citation for action in Papua, New Guinea. (Individual Batteries from the 1st Battalion, some no longer active, were credited with five European Theater Campaigns during World War II and were awarded a French World War II Croix de Guerre with Palm and the Belgian Fourragere 1940 for two citations in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army).

The 214th Field Artillery Regiment's single Battalion, the 1st (1-214 FA), completed nighttime multinational live-fire training during exercise African Lion 21 in June 2021 while assigned to the 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB). The 1-214 FA remains assigned to the 648th MEB as of Autumn 2023.
