U.S. ARMY 205TH MEDICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 205th Medical Battalion was approved on 10 December 1969. Blue and white are used to denote the organization’s origins from different Infantry units, including the 3rd and 7th Infantry Regiments; scarlet and white are for the Corps of Engineers and stand for the unit’s attachment to the 110th Engineer Battalion during World War II.

In the lower half of the insignia sections of wavy blue bands; these symbolize the campaigns the unit took part in Asiatic-Pacific Theater in World War II (Aleutian Islands, Leyte, Ryukyus). In the center, a scarlet cross is the universal symbol of medical care and signifies the Battalion’s core mission; the Philippine sun behind it is a reference to the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation the unit was awarded for the assault landing at Leyte.

On a more subliminal level, the design of the cross, Philippine sun, and watery sections simulates the paddle wheel of a steamboat as a reference to the Missouri River and Westport Landing, the first name of what eventually became Kansas City, the unit’s home city. “Ready Show Me” is also a reference to the unit’s location in Missouri, the “Show Me” state.

The 205th Medical Battalion was broken up on 1 September 2006. Its elements were reorganized as the 205th Medical Company, the 215th Medical Company, and the 708th Medical Company, with only the 205th Medical Company retaining the lineage and history of the Battalion.
