U.S. ARMY 204TH BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly referred to as a unit crest or DUI, the Dis-tinctive Unit Insignia of the 204th Brigade Support Battalion was originally approved for the 4th Medical Battalion on 7 November 1941. It was subsequently redesignated for the 204th Support Battalion on 2 June 1987. Its design comes from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) of the 5th “Red Diamond” Division, but charged with the Staff of Aesculapius, an emblem of the medical profession dating back thousands of years. Unlike the vast majority of Distinctive Unit Insignias approved for wear in the United States  Army, the DUI of the 204th Brigade does not feature the Brigade motto of FIAT, which is a single Latin word that translates into English roughly as “Let It Be Done.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.  More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 204th Brigade Support Battalion’s lineage goes back to November 1917 and the constitution of the 5th Sanitary Train at Camp Logan, Texas. Assigned to the 5th Division and comprising four Ambulance Companies and Field Hospitals, the unit took part in three World War I Campaigns before returning stateside to be reorganized and redesignated on 29 January 1921 as the 5th Medical Regiment.

In March 1940, the Reigment was redesignated as the 5th Medical Battalion, assigned to the 4th  Division (4th Infantry Division after February 1942) in July, and activated at Fort Benning (renamed Fort Moore in October 2023). It would undergo a couple of redesignations during the war, eventually taking part in five campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Designated as the 4th Medical Battalion by the end of the war, it was inactivated in 1946.

It proved to be a brief period of inactivity. Reactivated in 1948, the 4th Medical Battalion did not deploy to Korea during that conflict, but during the Vietnam War it took part in ten campaigns, with the Battalion as a whole (or less Company D) being awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation, two Republic of Vietnam (ROV) Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and an ROV Civil Actions Honor Medal, First Class. Additionally, Company D was tapped for a Valorous Unit Award, an ROV Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and a Civil Actions Honor Medal First Class, while Company B and the Battalion’s Clearing Section were awarded Presidential Unit Citations.

Following inactivation in December 1969, the Battalion was converted and redesignated as the 204th Forward Support Battalion, an element of the 4th Infantry Division; in 2005 it would be redesignated as the 204th Brigade Support Battalion. Since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the Battalion as a whole or individual component units was the recipient of two Valorous Unit Awards and two Meritorious Unit Commendations.

As of Autumn 2023, the 204th Brigade Support Battalion is not listed as an active unit. It is unclear if it has been inactivated/deactivated, redesignated, reorganized, or converted to another type of unit. We encourage customers with information regarding the 204th BSB to
