U.S. ARMY 203RD MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 203rd Military Intelligence Battalion was consti-tuted and activated on 2 October 1982 in the Regular Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. Inactivated from 1989 to 1996, the Battalion was withdrawn from the Regular Army and allotted to the Army Reserve in June 2001, but it has been called into active service on numerous occasions since that time in support of the War on Terrorism.

Although the Battalion has not been credited with participation in any of the campaigns of Operations Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom, several of its component units have earned military decorations for their service while deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Company C, 203rd Military Intelligence Battalion earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) for its service in and around Baghdad between September 2005 and September 2006, while two Battalion assets were tapped for an MUC while attached to another organization, the first being the Special Troops Battalion, 1st BCT, 10th Mountain Division (August 2005 to August 2006) serving in Iraq and the second being the 415th Military Intelligence Battalion (January 2011 to November 2011) while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

As of Summer 2023, the unit remains allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and is headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground in northern Maryland.

The Battalion was originally organized as a Technical Intelligence  unit, and this provenance is reflected in the design of the 203rd Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, most obviously in the motto “Technicians For Victory” inscribed on the insignia. The black helmet superimposed on a gear was adapted from the device of the 513th Military Intelligence Group, which exercised initial command and control over the battalion; the gear is another reference to the technical nature of the Battalion’s intelligence-gathering work. A blue globe denotes the worldwide scope of the Battalion’s mission, and the laurel at the insignia base is a symbol of achievement.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
