U.S. ARMY 202ND MEDICAL GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 202nd Medical Group Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 25 March 1983. A unit in the Florida Army National Guard, the design of the 202nd’s DUI recalled its home area with blue and white tones to represent the sky, ocean, and coastline of Daytona Beach, Florida. In its center, a sunburst is reminder of the amenable climate and the healing powers of sunlight.

A maroon medical cross is symbol of the mission of the group, and the wavy bar superimposed over it is another reference to the ocean around Florida. The white cross behind the sunburst is an emblem of the Franciscan friars who established missions in the area around 1587. The motto of “Medical Care Saves” encapsulates the core principle behind the mission of Army Medical Department units.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 202nd Medical Group is a former Florida Army National Guard unit that was inactivated, deactivated, disbanded, or reflagged following the Persian Gulf War of 1990-1991. During that conflict, all deployed Army medical units—more than half of which came from the National Guard and Army Reserve—were assigned to the 3rd Medical Command. Along with the 173rd Medical Group (USAR) and the 244th Medical Group (ARNG), the 202nd Medical Group was assigned to care for those units assigned to Echelons Above Corps. It took part in the Defense of Saudi Arabia and Liberation of Kuwait campaigns in that role, but its service history beyond that point is not readily accessible through public records.
