U.S. ARMY 202ND CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly referred to as a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 202nd Cavalry Regiment was approved on 31 October 2003, nearly thirty years after the unit was constituted in the South Carolina Army National Guard. The colors scarlet and white, as well as a pair of crossed sabers and a spur from a boot, are used to identify the unit as a Cavalry organization. At the top of the insignia is a fort, a reference to the Beaufort Arsenal in its home city of the same name following its 1991 redesignation. The Green recalls the association between Cavalry and the Armor branch; black denotes strength and solidarity; gold is the color excellence. “Guardians Of The Low Country” is a reference to the Low Country region of South Carolina, which includes the state’s four southernmost counties: Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
