U.S. ARMY 19TH MAINTENANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 19th Maintenance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, approved on 4 December 1941, uses the colors of crimson and yellow (here represented by gold) to reflects its former status as the 19th Ordnance Battalion. A total of nineteen cannonballs are used to denote the numerical designation assigned to the unit both as an Ordnance and a Maintenance unit, but the selection of cannonballs also recalls its service as an Ordnance battalion. “More Than Expected,” the unit motto, applies equally to an Ordnance or a Maintenance unit.

A lack of documentation makes it difficult to know when the 19th Maintenance Battalion received that designation or even when it first stood up. As the 19th Ordnance Battalion, it earned credit for participation in five World War II campaigns in the European theater. At some point it was assigned to 214th Field Artillery Brigade, III Corps Artillery, and it commanded two Maintenance Companies. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Battalion was stationed at Logistics Support Area (LSA ) Anaconda at Balad Air Base and also assisted Supply Support Activities throughout the theater.
