U.S. ARMY 19TH AIR DEFENSE ARTILLERY GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 19th Air Defense Artillery Group Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 14 October 1969, a busy year for the Group since it was around this time that it was transferred from the Army Air Defense Command Post in Highlands, New Jersey. It had been headquartered there since 1961, where it was one of a number of Air Defense Artillery Groups equipped with Nike missiles. From 1969 to 1974, the 19th ADA Group manned Nike Missiles at Fort MacArthur in Los Angeles until the unit was inactivated when the Nike Missile program was brought to an end.

An embattled chevron symbolizing strength and support forms the basis of the 19th Air Defense Artillery unit crest, with each of the four embrasures representing a campaign for which a predecessor in the unit’s lineage earned credit for participating in. A flaming upright arrow simulates the launch of air-defense missiles, while the fleur-de-lis recalls service in France. “In Honor We Defend” inscribed in gold (yellow) on a scarlet scroll employs the colors long associated with Artillery and Air Defense.
