U.S. ARMY 199TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 199th Support Battalion, now referred to as the 199th Brigade Support Battalion, is a unit in the Louisiana Army National Guard assigned to the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. It comprises four companies and three detachments stationed throughout the state, from Jonesboro in the northern part of the state to St. Martinsville down south, and from Alexandria roughly in the center of the state to Fort Polk in the west.

Approved on 11 April 1969, the 199th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia features four triangular segments joined at the center of the insignia and expand outward to suggest the Battalion’s control of logistical operations, its consolidation and dissemination of information, and its delivery of recommendations regarding supply and maintenance for the Brigade and its materiel.

The fleur-de-lis in the center of the insignia represents service in the European Theater, with the blue, wavy bars beside it denoting the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, both during World War II; the white peaked areas are allusions to Alaskan glaciers to recall the unit’s work on the AlCan Highway (Alaska-Canadian Highway); and the red, wavy bar signifies the Red River and—together with the central portion of the insignia—connotes Alexandria, Louisiana, the “Hub City” where the Battalion was organized. "Support To Victory" is the Battalion motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
