U.S. ARMY 194TH COMBAT SUSTAINMENT SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly referred to as a unit crest of a DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion was originally approved for the 194th Maintenance Battalion on 26 July 1967. It was redesignated for the 194th Support Battalion, with updated symbolism, on 17 October 2006. It is not clear when the insignias was redesignated for the 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.

A crimson background is used for the background of the center of the insignia to reflect the unit’s former status as a Maintenance unit. A crossed micrometer and a quill pen imply a support structure; the quill is also a symbol of the organization’s command and supervisory roles and the micrometer suggest technology and precision. A blue annulet around the crimson disc suggests a wheel and implies mobility and a continual delivery of services.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion was first constituted on 18 October 1927 in the Regular Army as the 8th Motor Repair Battalion. It was redesignated on 1 May 1936 as the 57th Quartermaster Regiment (Heavy Maintenance). The Regiment was activated on 25 June 1942 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.

On 1 August 1942, the Regiment was redesignated as the 47th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Regiment, but was broken up 30 September 1942 and its 1st Battalion redesignated as the 194th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Battalion, which became the 194th Ordnance Battalion in June 1943. This Battalion was inactivated on 30 June 1946 on Luzon in the Philippines. Nearly 20 years later, it was redesignated as the 194th Maintenance Battalion on 27 January 1967 and activated at Fort George G. Meade the next month, only to be inactivated on 22 May 1970 in the Republic of Korea (ROK).

The 194th Maintenance Battalion was subsequently reactivated, eventually being reassigned to the 23rd Area Support Group in Korea. By 2005, its consisted of a Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 2 aviation maintenance companies (Companies C and G, 52nd Aviation), a maintenance company (520th Maintenance Company), and a Quartermaster company (348th Quartermaster Company).

In June 2006, the 23rd Area Support Group was inactivated in the lead up to the reorganization and redesignation of the 19th Theater Support Command to the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. As a result, the 194th Maintenance Company was reorganized and redesignated as the 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. It was subsequently assigned to the 501st Sustainment Brigade (previously designated the 501st Corps Support Group), a subordinate unit of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command.

Currently, the 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, is assigned to the 2nd Sustainment Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division.
